Fungi conservation

You can become a citizen scientist in fewer than 2 minutes! All you need to do is download the iNaturalist app, select the Hidden Heroes Campaign and take a photo. We have included information below to help you download and navigate the app, as well as take part in fungi conservation responsibly.

Download and navigate the iNaturalist app

1. Download the iNaturalist app and sign upClick here for Apple. Click here for Android.

2. Join the ‘Hidden Heroes: Global Fungi Campaign’ on the iNaturalist app. You can do this by first selecting the Menu icon on the bottom menu bar and then selecting Projects. Once on the Projects page, you can search for our ‘Hidden Heroes: Global Fungi Campaign’ in the search box. Once found, select our project and then click Join. 

3. Start taking photos. Use the Camera icon to start taking photos. You can either take a photo directly in the app or upload a photo from your photo library. Your fungi photos will automatically be added to our campaign.

Taking Photos 📸

  • Take and upload a few photos of your fungi

  • Capture the fungi from multiple angles

  • Never disturb or destroy the fungi

  • Review your own photos by selecting the Me icon on the bottom menu bar


Contributing to citizen science 🧬

  • Share the names of the fungi if you know them

  • If you are not sure of the name of your fungi, simply enter “Fungi Including Lichens”. This will make sure your photos are tagged to our campaign

  • Include location tagging when uploading your photos

  • Respond to campaign members if they have helped you name your fungi. You will see a message icon appear by your fungi photo. If you agree with the identification, you should click ‘Suggest ID’ and enter in the suggested name. This will help you achieve research grade status

  • Also visit the web-based version of iNaturalist as this provides you with more campaign options and engagement opportunities
